One Handed NES Controller: Le Fin

  Here is the final part of the one handed NES controller build. So let's get to it! After soldering the mini-joystick onto the board, I hot glued the mini-joystick assembly to the board to make it never shear off or move. I used this mathematical equation to figure this out hot glue = π (put in place by the gods^6) I then took the surface mount 9.5mm high tact switch and soldered the connections to some ribbon cable.  After that, I put the wii  nunchuck controller shell next to each other to determine the length of the wire for the switch. The switch will come through the bottom of the top shell and protrude enough to hit it with your thumb easily. As an engineering side note, buttons that protrude are considered "proud" buttons. On to soldering it all together. Here I had to take the schematic and components and assemble them in a way that would fit inside the Wii Nunchuck controller. I started out by cutting piece of board that can fit inside the Wii Nunchuck controller but as large as possible. I realized that I'm going to have to basically have two boards. One that holds the chip and one that has all the buttons and mini joystick then I'll use ribbon cable to connect the two.   I put the chip along with some pull up resistors connected to each pin that a button is going to connect to. A pull up resistor basically pulls the state of the pin high (1) and when a button is pressed it connects it to ground therefore going low (0). The original controller had the same thing, I'm just replicating it here.   Well, It's been a really long time since I've actually be able to work on this thing but, I've finally got everything ready so let's dive in.  After desoldering both the chip and the NES controller cable, I purchased a Wii nunchuck controller to actually house this in. Now, As you can see, this thing gives us space to put the 5 way mini joystick two buttons that will act as the B and A buttons in a position like R1 and R2 on the dualshock controllers. The only other thing we need to add is one more button to reproduce the select button. Here are the things we need to reproduce: Up Down Left Right Start Select B A the mini joystick gives us Up Down Left Right Start (center click) the C and Z buttons on the Wii Nunchuck controller will be B and A respectively. And so it begins! Here is the first blog post about the One Handed NES Controller ! First we start off examining the controller. Now, what we need off of the controller board is two things, the 4021 Shift register (the heart of the controller) and the cable that goes from the NES to the controller. That one chip, the shift register I spoke of, that's the thing that takes the buttons signals, condenses them down and sends it down the wires in the actual cord which then gets interpreted by the NES and in turn, makes Mario jump and makes Simon Belmont whip the crap out of Dracula.  We need to remove the components that I mentioned above, so we can re-purpose them in the one handed controller. I only need these two components because the rest will be replicated elsewhere but for the controller to work, I'll need both of these.
